Looking for delicious seafood that’s responsibly caught? Head to your local Star Market where we’re continuously working to provide you with sushi and fresh & frozen seafood that meets our robust Responsible Seafood Program requirements. Read on to learn more about our commitment.

What Does “Responsibly Caught” Mean?

“Responsibly Caught” seafood is based on a simple principle: meet today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. As a company, we have adopted a rigorous Responsible Seafood Program that relies on leading environmental standards including the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s well-established Seafood Watch Program! Seafood Watch utilizes a traffic light system for rating wild and farmed seafood, Green indicates environmentally preferred sources, Yellow indicates a seafood source as a good alternative and the Red rating applies to fisheries or farms with major environmental concerns.

We are dedicated to sourcing our seafood from fisheries or farms that are rated Green “Best Choice” or Yellow “Good Alternative” by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch standards, certified to an equivalent environmental standard, or making measurable and time-bound improvements.

What About Sushi?

Our ambitious Responsible Seafood Program now includes a commitment to use responsible sources in our sushi! Our Sushi Commitment is focused on ensuring the Top 5 wild and farmed-raised seafood species used in our sushi will meet the Responsible Seafood Policy by the end of 2022.

To ensure we meet our commitment, we’ve developed plans to transition tuna, farmed salmon, species of whitefish used for surimi (imitation crab) and farmed shrimp to responsible sources. In addition, we have pledged to discontinue the sale of unagi (eel) until sustainable sources become available. Not only are wild eel populations in severe decline, but they can’t be bred in captivity and the current situation has led to poaching activities in some regions.

We take our commitment to seafood sustainability seriously. Together, we can make choices that are better for our workers and healthier for the ocean by purchasing seafood that’s responsibly caught.
